Marry Me

from Mere & Tokyo by Mere & Tokyo

/

about

I wrote this song to propose to Meredith, and finally finished recording and mixing it on the day of our first year anniversary!

lyrics

Maybe I, Contradictory to some guys,
Should work on being shy, and wait a year or more

But Meredith Frey,
You caught the eyes in the back of my head
There's something lonely about my bed
On the living room floor

Just last night, I was stretching your bungie ties
To rappel off the western side, off the 18th floor
So that I, after we say goodnight,
Without breaking the rules of our apartments
I could see you more

If you aren't bothered by my balding
or kissing a missing tooth,
There's nothing left to talk about
if I can't say the truth:

Mere would you marry me.
Mere would you be my wife,
Even if I have to ask twice,
Mere would you marry me Mere be very married to me!

In the highs, when the money is good enough,
And we don't own too much stuff,
Let's hang the laurels on our shields
So in the lows, when we've pushed all that we can shove
From the pestle of our love, I'll take the little that it yields
And renew the crowning leaves again, to fan that firing kiln
And beat our chests with anger and excitement at the
bittersweet sobriety of friends.

And if God can take my candle dimly humming to itself
Trying to hide under a bushel on a long-neglected shelf
And erupt from it a passion that can overtake my soul,
Then He sure as Heaven has the strength make our halves a whole...
